I'm in Cincinnati again visiting Quinn. It's been a good time so far. Went to the mall ate some good food, hung out with some of his jazz friends. Good times. went to a jazz club last night and sat in on a jam session a little bit. Today we're going to the Sam Ash store. lots and lots of Musical instruments, so of course that will be a good time.
There is something that has been bothering me while i've been here though. This topic bothered me at eastman also. I've noticed that the vast majority of jazz students and people who are into jazz are white. Now don't get me wrong, i think that is great, but it saddens me. Jazz was created by my people. started in the cotton fields of slavery and grew into a distinct and unique and truly "american" artform. it wasn't stolen from Europe like so many other things have been. African Americans began this music based on feeling. My point is this.... Today jazz is mainly played and studied by non black youth. At least that is all i see in music conservatories. Black youth have no inteserest in it. Our culture has been reduced to bitches and hoes and how much money we have, all negative and materialistic media. This sparked my mind driving from the jazz club last night. There I was sitting with about 30 young white aspiring jazz musicians, and the only non white musicians in the club were myself, Quinn, and one drummer. Everyone was so into the music, and respected the artform. Preceeding the jam session, Quinn and I drove around looking for a place to get some fast food, and all i saw on the way were tons and tons of highschool age black kids( mind you it's around 12 am) standing on street corners, girls half dressed, guys not doing a damn thing, and rap music blasting to the highest degree. All they were listening to was music about killing, drugs, or degrading women. It's sad what my people have degraded themselves to. Most blame "THE MAN" others blame society, I blame the people and the parents. People aren't teaching thier children right these days. The parents are far worst than the children the majority of the time. In all, it just makes me sad that the people who started this brilliant artform don't even have an interest in the progression of it. It's Just sad. I'm just glad that there are people of my race like Myself and Quinn who do give a damn about it, and love it, and are willing to cultivate it and take it to the next level.
Well i'm going to get ready to start this beautiful day now. take care all!!
