Marcus Printup Posted by Picasa

Well today My buddy Mike called me up cause he wanted to go see Marcus printup play in syracuse NY. So i said sure. We drove down there, and saw a great concert. it was the Central New York nonet featuring Marcus and a legendary musican and Taba player Howard Johnson. They played tunes from the famous Miles davis/ Gil Evans collaboration Birth of the cool. It sounded great, and Marcus sounded amazing. After the show Mike and I went up to the stage to say hello. We had already met him before and Quinn knows him personally as does Mike, i knew him, but haven't had many conversations with him in the past few years. He looked at me and was like " I know you don't I." hehe, I reminded him of who I was and he immediatly said " Trumpet and drums right?" Had no idea he remembered me, but it was all good. We chatted for a few and he said that he was having an afterparty in his sweet at the hotel down the road and Mike and i should come. Well seeing as Mike and I had NOTHING else to do tonight we went. We hung out and ate and talked to the musicians who had played in the concert. there was this guy who played french horn who put almost everyone to shame with his improvising chops. I mean, this guy played the horn like it was a saxophone. It was incredible. turned out he also doubled on trumpet and trombone also. Talk about jack of all trades master of none. He throws that theory right out of the window. Talked to marcus a bunch about typical trumpet stuff, but we mostly talked about women and life and bein on the road. It wasn't like a learning thing, just a hang. He's coming to do an album in Rochester sometime next month, so we're all gonna get together and hang.
So i'd say today was a great day. Ultimatly when Mike and I move to New York next year, we'll probably both take trumpet lessons from him. It's good to know famous trumpet players who live and work in NYC!
